What's Happenin' in Nicaragua! Where's the Rain? October 11, 2009 • Kassidy Mefford At this time last year, we were mud boggin', generator running, debate watching, and freezing our comfortably acclimated tropical weather asses off in the worst winter Nicaragua had seen in fifteen years. Now, El Niño, has given us this strange welcoming of gorgeous afternoons and slightly rainy nights to keep us swimming, surfing, sailing, and moving forward with our never ending projects. Prana del Sol is looking as fabulous as ever, and our newest addition, Max, (a Minnesota boy who sailed his 27 foot sailboat here from the great Northern America) and I have been hacking trails Nica style with our machetes to find the best views from each lot. What we've found is that there are quite a few lots left lower on the hill with Ocean views! The lots are unbelievable affordable, starting at $30,000 and only a short walk to the surf. Lot number three that holds Dale's sweet little casita is also harboring my organic garden, soon to be filled with avocados, mangos, watermelon, jalepeños, wheat grass, alfalfa sprouts, bell peppers, and tomatoes. Also in our projects was the massive chicken coop built at the Casa Verde (our employee quarters / workshop) and a kitty palace for my growing brood of cats. The chickens cost us $45 for eleven of them, and I don't know if we've made up for it money wise, but we sure do eat a lot of omelets and fried egg sandwiches, and cheese egg scrambles, and poached egg surprises, and... well, you get the picture. The kitty shelter came as a necessity after being bombarded by several orphan felines left on my doorstep. I started with two. Two is ok... two cats doesn't mean anyone is crazy. Then the one of my two had three babies... and then three more toddlers showed up... and then three orphan newborns were dropped off in a box on my steps... and then last night the toddlers multiplied like gremlins which now makes fourteen! Thankfully my handy carpenters were on it and built a model tree house (we said it was a "model tree house" because none of the guys wanted to feel stupid for building a cat house), and the result is priceless. The cats love it on their stoop and they can sit and feel like queens and mock the jealous dogs below. Next project... a real tree house in front of Dale's house on the beach. Come visit us and see what all the talk is about!
